Yangtze River is the longest river in China and also one of the world’s busiest rivers. The Yangtze River Belt Economic Zone incorporates almost half of China’s population and 41% of its GDP. In recent years,it has been over-burdened with shipping, hydraulic engineering, mining, and electricity generation among other functions. Industrial parks and heavy chemical industries have been built, and hazardous chemicals are shipped, both of which pose hidden dangers to the area. The construction of the Yangtze River Economic Belt was elevated to a national strategy in 2014. Since then, the Belt embarked on the path of coordinating ecological protection with the goal of green and sustainable development.
